Different First Page Deletes Page Number - ?
I am using Section Breaks (Next Page) for individual chapters in a book. I'm using the Different First Page feature to eliminate the Even/Odd Header on the first page of each chapter. So far, so good. However, Word also eliminates (removes) the Page Number on the first chapter pages, which I don't wish to do.
How can I avoid having the Page Number removed by Word? If that's not possible, how do I re-insert the Page Number without affecting other Page Numbers? Thanks. |

If you apply a 'different first page' layout, the first page header & footer must be given their own content - they don't inherit it from the other pages precisely because it's 'different'!

I understand what you said, but I do not see how it addresses my question of why Word removes the Page Number.

It's not so much that Word deletes removes as that the 'first page' header didn't have a page number to begin with. By design, every Section in a Word document has three headers and footers: primary, first page, and even page. Unless one changes the page setup to use the 'different first page', or 'different odd and even' layout, these just sit unused and usually unpopulated in the background and everything gets done using the primary header & footer.

Thanks Charles and Paul. Perhaps the problem I am having is related to the fact that the document already had page numbers assigned before I started fooling with Sections and Different First Page (which I did because like the Header and Footer presentation). Where I'm at now is that I can modify the Header as I wish, but the page number gets removed. Then, if I go to the Footer and enter a page number, that number gets placed on the first page of all the Sections. I'm afraid that I'm in a tangled web and don't know how to get out of it.

You are caught in a tangled web. It is one into which anyone, who does not understand the rather convoluted structure of headers and footers and sections, falls.
Header/Footer Settings Recap You start with the concept that page numbers are not something independent of headers or footers. They are almost always something inside a header or footer. (This is even true of page numbers in the left or right margin.) The rules for headers and footers apply to page numbers. When you set "different first page" for any section, any new sections created for that document starting in the section with that setting will also be set for "different first page." Whenever you start a new section, the headers and footers in the new section would be linked to previous. This is true, even if they are not displayed in the new section. |

Thanks Charles. Prior to receiving your latest post, I figured out what I was (stupidly) doing wrong. I was turning off Link to Previous on Headers but not on Footers. I am out of the tangled web, and I agree with your "convoluted" statement.
