Proofing language issues
I have the same problem. Word keeps changing the proofing language to Spanish. The document is totally English. I change the settings to English in Review > Language > Set Proofing Language and also in Options > Language > Choose Editing Language. When I check again, it still says English in the default for Editing, Display and Help Languages, but whenever I run spell checking, the language is Spanish. I've tried to reset it multiple times, even restarting Word, but it doesn't stick! I am running Windows 7 64-bit and Office Professional Plus 2010, Word

Proofing language Fix
I fixed it! As someone here suggested, I checked all my styles and several of them had Spanish as the language setting. I also found several where the spell check option was set to Do not check spelling.
On the Home ribbon, select the style, then right-click and select Modify. In the Modify Style dialog box, click Formst > Language and then in the Language dialog box, select the language you want to use for proofing that style. You will need to reapply the modified style(s) manually, or at the bottom of the Modify Style dialog, click Automatically update. |

Hi, kiyap. I just saw your posts and would like to draw your attention to something which might otherwise lead to surprises for you and others.
Checking the "Automatically update" box for a style tells Word to update all instances of the style whenever you make a local change to it. For example, let's say you have body text style you have created and are using. Reviewing your work, you decide that a one-line paragraph ought to be bold, or red. If you select the entire paragraph, including the hidden pilcrow symbol (¶) at the end, which "contains" all the paragraph-level formatting parameters, ALL paragraphs in your document of that style will instantly adopt the new formatting. There's a reason that you will not see the update box in the dialogue for Normal, or for character styles! But most paragraph styles include it. Note that the updating can happen in a long document with a style that occurs, say, on pages 4, 17, 25, and 47 -- you might not notice the change until later and then spend a lot of time repeatedly trying to fix each instance. I speak from experience. After you have made the needed update, you may wish to uncheck it until further necessity arises. |

Turning off the option "Detect language automatically" at Review | Language | Sete Proofing Language ensures that Word doesn't try to change the language at the insertion point.
