I suspect this is related to the problem in Word 2013-2016 for Windows where the AutoCorrect option was deleted from the spelling context menu. There is a cure for those versions but I do not know that it works on the Mac version. Word AutoCorrect Restored

You may want to post on a Mac-specific forum.
