Default Links to images broken after "Save As"

Hi,

I've recently converted back to Word after using Latex for my PhD thesis. I like to edit my images in .eps format and when I add them to my Document I like to use the "Link to file" option as it keeps the document size low (cloud storage on slow connection) and allows me to edit the .eps files externally in Illustrator without having to worry about re-embedding them in the document afterwards.

In order to add images to my document in this way I go to:

Pictures -> Insert -> *select EPS file* -> Insert (dropdown) -> Link to file.

I have noticed from going to File -> Edit links to Files, that I need to do this twice for every image since after the first time they embed in the document as normal for some reason. But that's fine.

The issues I'm currently having is that whenever I do a "Save As" for a new revision of my document, the majority of my images (but not all !?!) suddenly become embedded in the document, leading to a large file size and confusion as to what files are linked.

Is there a reason for this or a better way of doing this that I'm missing?

Advanced thanks for the help.

Mark
