I am using word 2007. I created a template.

On the top ribbon in the font section I have a capital A with a red bar under it. I wanted to change this to black so I saved it as a new template. When I open up the template it is back to a red bar.

Why is this? can the ribbon not be set in a template?

The font colour selector retains the last used setting. It's an application wide setting.

You can edit the template ribbon http://gregmaxey.com/word_tip_pages/...bbon_main.html and you can create paragraph/character styles that have the font colours you require and apply them from buttons added to the template ribbon (or just use Quck Styles).

Supplementing Graham's response:

Even if you were to modify the Ribbon you cannot change the Word setting which is to default to Red. I suspect that this is because the meaning of the control (change font color) is more intuitive with red than it would be with black.

Again, it will be set at whatever color was last used during the Word session.
It resets whenever you restart Word. It has been like this since at least Word 97.

You could set a character style to be black or automatic if you wanted to do so. However, automatic is the default setting for most styles.
