I am writing a long document with printing on both sides of each page. I can get the page numbers to show on the even numbered pages or on the odd numbered pages, but not both. The page numbers are correct, it's just that alternating page numbers are not displayed.

Your description suggests you have a document with a 'different odd & even' page layout, but you've only added the page # field to one or other of the corresponding footers; you need to add it to both.

The only difference in the page layout is the gutter location, left or right, as the document will become a bound book. If that is the issue, how do I add the page number to both? When I add it to one, it disappears from the other.

What Paul was saying is that you have your headers/footers set for different even/odd.

I am guessing that you are using the Page Number button on the ribbon and picking a location (top, bottom, or side) to insert your page number. This replaces any existing header (or footer).

Many people want page numbers to be on the outside (unbound side). Go into the header/footer without the page number showing. If necessary tab to where you want it displayed. Press Alt+Shift+P to insert a page number field. Alternatively, when your insertion point is where you want the page number, use the page number button to insert a page number at the current location (not top, bottom, or margin).

Ah you guys are amazing. Thank you for the posting and answering this question. I have been literally sitting for hours trying to make some changes to a manuscript and coming across your posts sorted out my problem with page numbering on different sides of the page - even on left handside and odd on right handside.
