Default Struggling with a layout issue. Need Help, Please!

First off, I have Office 2010 and I have a word doc that I'm struggling with a layout issue and need some help.

The issue is that I have a Wedding program that will be printed on 8 1/12 by 11 paper turned horizontally so I can fold the page so I have a front cover page and a back page. Where I'm having difficulty is that I wish to insert a JPEG file as the background of the cover page but I would like to overlay the picture with text but I want the background of the text box to be transparent. Right now I can create a text box and position the box with the text inside over the picture just fine but instead of the background of the box being transparent, the background is a white box. I've tried numerous things but nothing seem to allow me to make the background of the text box to be transparent. Can anyone help me? Thanks

To change the fill of a text box you need to select the BORDER of the text box. I would then right click the same border and choose Fill.

I would normally do a layout like that with a two column table and rotate the text 90 degrees in both cells. You can't rotate text inside a table upside down but you can turn text 90 degrees in either direction so you can achieve the same result that way.

Word calls the background "fill."
