If you insert object > create from file > pick the file and don't check the 'link' box the file is embedded in the document, whether as a viewable file of as an icon. It can be double clicked to open the embedded document in its default application defined in Windows.
A linked item would have to be accessible from the document, wherever it was opened, which effectively precludes links to your personal files. This does however create huge files, so 'sending' them to people creates other problems, as there are limits on what can be sent by e-mail, and those limits are too high for many users, so I would recommend a web location for them to be downloaded from.
