Red line does not show with simple markup view in tracked changes
When using tracked changes I work in simple markup view. However, the red lines in the left margin to indicate that text has been edited have disappeared. Why would this happen and how can I reinstate the red lines?

Same problem in Word 2019
Did you ever figure this out?

To get full control over the display (and printing) of tracked changes, I suggest that you choose the "All Markup" view. Use the Advanced Track Changes Options dialog box to set all options for displaying revisions in your Word installation.

I'm copyediting the document, so I don't want to see all the markup while I'm working on it and I'm not trying to print it. The red line in the margin is convenient as a visual tracker of my place in the document.
It seems switching to All Markup or toggling Track Changes off and then on again fixes the problem, but only for a few seconds to a minute, and then the line disappears again. It's ultimately more of a nuisance than an actual problem, but I'd like to know the cause. |

You can choose, in the Advanced Track Changes Options dialog box, to only display the Changed Lines.
However, if "Simple Markup" is sufficient for the needs of your document, you should be able to use it exclusively. I'm not aware of an issue when the Changed Lines disappear. I am using Word 2019 myself and I haven't seen that happen. Are you displaying the document in Print Layout view? Are you running some sort of add-in with Word or Office?

Yes, I'm in Print Layout view, and I'm not using any add-ins. I've been editing with Tracked Changes for years with the Simple Markup setting and the disappearing line happens only occasionally.

It seems to be permanent within a document. Also, the lines don't disappear entirely; they're present here and there, but don't accurately reflect the amount of changes present.

Can you share an example document for illustration?

I'm having the same problem. I use Word on a Mac, from Office 365, so I always have the latest version. This is a bug which seems to have happened following an update. I'll be using Track Changes in the simple view mode, and the red line disappears intermittently. Switching track changes off and on again fixes it, but only for a brief time.
It's a real pain! Does anyone know why this has started happening and how it can be fixed? |
