Default How do I get past a text box?

In MSWord, when I insert a text box, then try to click to the right of it, the cursor does not move. My work-around is to first insert an extra return, then insert the text box above it, or insert the text box into, or between, paragraphs, after the body of text has been typed. I'm sure I'm missing something simple. Can someone enlighten me?
