Legacy check boxes not working Word 2013
We have a lot of templates that were created in Word 2010 with Windows 7 which contain Legacy check boxes. We are now migrating to Office 2013 and these checkboxes seem to have converted to a pictures and are no longer clickable boxes (protected or unprotected), neither works. If I delete these and replace them with new checkboxes via Word 2013 they work perfectly but I really do not wish to have to edit over 200 precedents to replace checkboxes.
We have tried on a machine running Word 2010 with Windows 10 and it still works so it is an office issue, not windows, however we have found that if we untick the windows setting for "Turn on Clear Type", the checkboxes are okay, but that causes a different set of problems so our IT department does not want to change this setting. I attach 1 page of one of our templates containing these checkboxes, along with a screenshot of what it looks like on my computer, in case you don't see the same result I am seeing. Has anyone found a solution to this problem? Last edited by lostenfeld; 07-07-2016 at 09:22 PM. Reason: Attachment seems to be missing |

One possibility that you might consider now, especially as you are no longer using Word 2010, which is dramatically better with legacy forms than later Word versions, is to take the opportunity to convert the fields to content controls. To aid that, see http://www.gmayor.com/ExtractDataFromForms.htm which includes a process to do this (and another to name the fields to aid data extraction). It also of course extracts data from completed forms to Excel.
I have tested the process on your attached document and it converts the errant fields in Word 2013.

Thank you for that. If I can't find a fix and it turns out I do need to modify all the documents, then this will be a very useful tool. I still hope to not have to modify the documents but it is looking doubtful.

I have stumbled across a fix for this. If I untick the Word setting under File | Advanced | Display "Use subpixel positioning to smooth fonts on screen", the checkboxes appear as they should. I do not yet know what further issues this will bring but for now they are working. Hopefully someone will find this useful.
