In Word 2000 when you clicked on a hyperlink to move around inside a document, a fore/back toolbar showed up. You could click the "back" and return to where you clicked. I cannot find this function in Word 2007. Does anyone know if it has been removed or I just cannot find it?

That's what I'm looking for too. So now, almost 4 years later (from your original post) the question is -- did you ever find an answer?

You can add the 'follow hyperlink' arrows to the Quick Access Toolbar. That'll give you the former forward/back facility. See under Word Options|Customize.

It's not the getting there, or the "make hyperlink happen" I need. It's the getting back part.

In the document I am building, I am interpreting some multi-layered OOP. An item called txtMyTextBox would hyperlink to a glossery type item that might say "TextBoxes are based on Class fooby which inherits from foobydad, which in turn is based on foobygeneric". Once a person has followed the hyperlink to that explanation, a return to the jumping off point in the document is essential. The user isn't going to spend time inserting a bookmark each time a trip on the hyperlink highway starts. The majority of users will be comfortable with and used to the "Back" button when in the browser environment, and will expect the same here.

Hope that clarifies what I'm looking for.

Under Word Options|Customize, you can add both the Back and Forward arrows to the QAT. The arrows are green in colour.

You may need to select the 'Commands not in Ribbon' or 'All Commands' option under 'Choose commands from' before you'll be able to see them in the commands list.

And that, that -- THAT is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a million (and a half).

Shift+F5 will take you back to your previous cursor point location. Of course, if your cursor wasn't at the hyperlink, you could find yourself several pages earlier or something.

This did not work in the sample I am using. The problem with adding the "Back" arrow to my screen is that the end user quite likely won't have that in place, and it won't travel with the document.

Perhaps this is part of the problem, but I am using Word 2007 in a Win7 environment. I will probably save the finished document in Word 1997-2003 version, but Win7 is the only OS I work with now. My objective is to make it possible for the end user of my document to return to the jump-off point. Might it be that I should build a macro into the document that has a hotkey attached? If so, I have no idea how to build such a macro.

It doesn't matter which Word version you're using, these settings do not travel with the document. There's no guarantee a Word 2003 or earlier user will have the navigation buttons enabled either - or that they'd even have the web toolbar enabled.

On the macro front, I suppose it would be possible to code one to check whether the navigation buttons are enabled and, if not, enable them. Doing that creates other issues, though, such as when we close the document, do we delete the buttons if they weren't enabled beforehand, etc.
