Having trouble with footers in Word 2004

I'm a novice word user and I need to create a template for a client word 2004 for Mac OS X. I need a cover page with a different header than the rest of the pages and I want the footer to be the same on every page. I set it up with "Different First Page" checked, but whenever I try to change the vertical positioning of my footer on the second page to match the first page it moves the one on the first page too. This is very frustrating and I have been trying to figure it out for days now. Can someone please help me?
