How to Solve a Font Book Problem?
MacBook Pro OS 10.11.5 with Word 2011.
I'm using Photoshop Elements to design a book cover and the title is in Appleton Regular font. My Font Book list shows Appleton > Regular in the list and it's the same as the font available in Elements. But when I'm using Word, the only Appleton font listed doesn't have the word "Regular" in it. And when I begin typing, the font isn't anything like the Appleton Regular that's available in Elements. All the other fonts I've used are available in both Word and Elements, but I can't figure out why this particular one isn't. Any ideas would be appreciated, and thanks in advance. Tosh |

You may have a duplicate or corrupt/damaged font (not necessarily even the one having problems). Go to the Applications folder and run the FontBook app (located in Applications/Utilities folder) to resolve any duplicates. FontBook Help can guide you through the process. If you find any duplicates you must restart your system after resolving them. If font-related problems persist, you may have a damaged font file – FontBook won’t tell you if a font file is damaged. To isolate a damaged font, create a folder, then:
1. Move about half of the fonts there by families (and it's better to restart); 2. If the problem persists, it lies in one of the active fonts; if not, swap the fonts between the active folder and those in the isolation folder; 3. Colour the fonts in the isolation folder with green; and 4. Repeat from step 1 In this way, you'll be testing about 1/2 of the fonts, then 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, etc., thus working through all the fonts in a few iterations. It's possible that you will still get an error after this, in which case you either have more than one corrupt font, or the problem lies elsewhere.

Thank you, Paul, for that excellent tutorial on Font Book investigation.
Since opening this thread, I've discovered that part of the problem lies in a peculiarity with Photoshop Elements in which glyphs contained in .otf fonts can't be pasted into a .psd document that isn't created with the full version of Photoshop. I've not been able to find an Appleton .ttf, so I'll have to solve that in another way. That's not an issue for this forum, of course, but I am still baffled by why an .otf font that's in my Font Book and validates okay won't work in Word. Knowing how to check for a damaged font is news to me and I really appreciate the help. Thank you, and best regards, Tosh |

Have you checked whether the font prints correctly in Word? If so, it may just be a screen display issue. The presence or absence of 'Regular' in Word may be inconsequential; Word often lists just the parent font and not its bold/italic/etc. variants when the font set has more than one file (whether or not all those variants are installed).

Thanks for the suggestion, but it prints just like it appears on the screen, which is nothing like shown in the Font Book. |

I found a tutorial showing how to access all the features in an Open Type font and tried it to see if that would make any difference. It didn't, and this screenshot shows the difference between how Appleton appears in a Word document and what the preview window shows. Does this provide any clue as to what the problem might be?
Thanks, Tosh |
