Default Hyperlink to Place in Document Issue

Hi,

This is my problem:
- I have Headings in my document.
- I create a hyperlink to a certain Heading (e.g. 3.3.2).
- I change the document so now Heading 3.3.2 become 3.3.3.
- Now my hyperlink takes me to the 3.3.2 instead of the intended 3.3.3.

Is there a way to create a hyperlink that will be indifference to order/location changes?

Regards,
Ayal.

Why are you using Hyperlinks instead of cross-references? Hyperlink references don't auto-update, so they're unsuitable for documents subject to ongoing edits.

I'll check the Cross-reference option and will let you know if this works.

Regards.

Cross-Reference worked for me - thanks Macropod.

Now I have to find how to change the format of a Cross-Reference, since for some odd reason Word does not format it as Hyperlink, or allow you to set the format of all Cross-Reference in your document...

This link http://wordfaqs.mvps.org/formatcross....htm#FormatAll have useful info, but for some reason the "Replace" doesn't work for me (it finds nothing).

Enjoy.

That is by design - people generally don't want cross-references appearing as hyperlinks in printed documents.

You may find it useful to turn word's field shading on - see under File|Options|Advanced>Show Document Content.

Enjoy.
Remember, Word was created to put words on paper. While there may be good reasons for underlining web urls on paper, there is virtually no reason to do so with a hyperlink to a bookmark. That is what a cross-reference to a heading is. That a particular word or phrase acts as a hyperlink in the electronic form of the document is not particularly useful information in the printed form of the document. You may still want to underline it to draw attention to it, I suppose.

I can certainly understand wanting special formatting, though, if you are using the document as a pdf or in Word form and not on paper.

To find a field, you have to have field codes displayed. Alt+F9

When I tried this in Word 2010, I could not get a single underline to work, but a double-underline did. Replacing with the hyperlink style did not add any underlining.

First, I don't agree with you that it is useless to format Cross-Reference on a printed document. Web hyperlink stand-out on a printed document even without any formatting.
Also, Cross-Reference formatting can be ignored during printing.

Regarding the "Replace", I tried several options in the "Find What" box but nothing was found, so of course no formatting was done.

I'm on Office 2013.

Regards.

You need to have field codes displayed in the document for Find to find a field. When you have field results displayed, you will get nothing found. That is, you need to be able to see the braces {} that are field delimiters. It is this first brace that Word's find is looking for.

Ignoring this formatting during printing will involve changing it. There is nothing you can click on to not print the underscore.

Rather than using direct formatting, you could create a character style with the characteristics you want. That way, to prepare it to print witohut those characteristics, you would only need to modify the style.

No-one said it was useless. Please pay attention to what is said before trying to correct it.

I have no idea what that is supposed to mean.

If you want your Cross-References to have a particular format, you should employ the Charformat switch. See: https://support.office.com/en-ie/art...6-4efc027f2cf3

Note: you shouldn't use Charformat and Mergeformat switches in the same field.
