Default Location of New Templates

I am having trouble locating my newly created templates. Every effort to create them results in them being filed c:users\myusername\documents. Yes, they are docx files but not where they ought to be.

I expect to find all of my templates in c:users\myusername\AppData\Microsoft\Templates but they are not there to be found.

Perhaps I have a preference setting set incorrectly but I dont know where to look. Can someone help please?

Docx files are not templates; they are documents. templates have the dot, dotx or dotm extension, depending on the template type. Regardless, you can choose whatever location you like to save a template. As indicated in the Word 2007 & Later Key Data File Locations 'Sticky' thread at the top of this forum, user templates should normally be saved in:
C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Temp lates\

As Paul already said, new templates must be .dotx or .dotm files. By default in Word 2010 they will be stored in the same folder as your documents. This is bad, but you'll have to move them. I would suggest either your User Templates folder, your Workgroup Templates folder, or a sub folder. The User Templates folder is always the location of the normal template.

Prior to Word 2007, templates were stored by default in the user templates folder. Beginning with Word 2013 you can designate a default folder for these. With Word 2007 and 2010, you have to either deliberately save them in a templates folder or move them after you save them for them to be best used.

Okay, but I cannot seem to save it as a template? When I click "Save As" it gives me the opportunity to to select "Save as type." So I dutifully choose "word template" but it creates a docx instead and puts it in my regular document location? Why is that?

That suggests you have a faulty Office installation or Word addin. Try repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair). If that has no effect, try running Word in safe mode (hold down the Ctrl key while starting Word). If the problem goes away, you have a faulty Word addin.
