Paragraph Formats and Page Breaks

Let's say that I have an H1 paragraph style configured to put a page break before.
I also have an H2 paragraph style configured to put a page break before.

Is it possible to configure things so that the H2 paragraph will not automatically insert a page break if the paragraph immediately before it is an H1?

Actually, I think I worked out a solution over lunch.

Create a special H2 format, H2a, basically, that does not include the page break before, and set the H1 to have H2a follow it.

But if anyone else has an alternate solution, I'd be glad to hear it.

Some authorities would suggest that jumping from heading to heading is bad practice anyway … and so the problem goes away :-}

Surely you could format the Style for whichever option is most likely to be the standard required and add/remove the page break before format for the lesser option as needed? That would also mean not having to mess around with the Table of Contents, if you have one, to get it to incorporate an non-standard heading format.

I had considered that, yes, but this will be a template for someone else who does not have much experience using styles. So the more automatic I can make it, the better.

You will want your alternative style, i.e. Heading 2a, to be based on Heading 2. That way it will retain the properties of that style for other purposes.
