Default Headers Properly Not Appearing on First Page of Section, Except When an email Recipient Opens it

Hello,

I have formatted a book document replete with headers relative to each section in the book (chapters and sub-sections within chapters). As per popular convention, headers are removed from the first pages of new sections (chapters and their subsections) so that nothing appears at the top of these pages. On my end everything looks great, headers are properly not appearing at the tops of these pages, but are appearing where the should be in subsequent pages. However, when I send it to a recipient, and he opens it, headers somehow appear at the top of the first pages of sections. Any thoughts on what may be causing this? I am using MS Word 2010 for Windows, and I am unsure what version he is using.

Thanks.

How are you removing the headers from the first pages of new sections? The normal approach would be to use a 'different first page' layout. If that's what you're using, it suggests either the recipient is modifying the document somehow or they're using an application other than Word that doesn't understand such layouts.

Thanks for the reply. I am using the "different first page setting" on the Headers & Footers toolbar, yes. They are using Word 2016 (I am using Word 2010). I wonder what the deal is here, strange.

What happens when I send my document to someone else? Will Word mess up my formatting?

Well, since Word 2016 respects and employs the same "different first page setting" as all previous Word versions, that suggests someone is messing with the file at the recipient's end. The info in Charles' link re formatting has no bearing on this.
