Default Weird issue with bookmark and cross-reference

So I am working with Word version 2016. I've inserted several bookmarks and cross-references without issue, but for some reason Word keeps giving me an error when I cross-reference the date bookmark.

So I can go through the document, bookmark the date, cross-reference the date, and it works fine. Then when I close the document and open it again, all of the bookmarks and references stay except the date bookmark and cross-references. Word will also give me the error message everytime I open it with "We're sorry. We can't open DOC because we found a problem with its contents" Details - Unspecified error. Location: Part: /word/document/xml, line: o, Column: o" Granted I can move forward and still open it, but the date bookmark and cross-references are gone.

The only thing I can think of is I did mess with the format of the date so instead of it being xx/xx/xxxx it would say something like month day, year. But that was before I bookmarked it (I think so, anyway?), so I have no idea why it is being finicky with the date and nothing else.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you!

Your document has acquired some of corruption. Corrupt documents can often be 'repaired' by inserting a new, empty, paragraph at the very end, copying everything except that new paragraph to a new document based on the same template (headers & footers may need to be copied separately), closing the old document and saving the new one over it.

Thank you for your help. That didn't help and neither did any of the other corrective remedies I tried. I ended up removing the date insert altogether and just having a text insert instead. Fixed the problem. Weird.
