Hi,

I've tried googling an answer to this problem but all I get is information on Word 2010. I have Word 2007 and I've gotten the above error message when I try and access some of my word documents. Those documents do come up but the formatting is gone. I have plenty of disk space and have no reason to believe the memory has been affected. Can someone tell me how to fix this?

Sherry

The answers for Word 2007 & 2010 are essentially the same, so it's of little consequence that most of the hits apply to Word 2010.

Have you tried repairing the Office installation (via Word Options|Resources|Diagnose)?

You can also get this problem if you're trying to access files on removable media or if there are too many tmp files in your temp folder.

Hi Macropod,

Thank you for answering. The reason I differentiated between Word 2007 and 2010 is that I could not find the described places to click on when I googled for help. Maybe they're there but I overlooked them.

I went to the link you provided. I tried inserting a file into a blank document and I tried starting Word with the /a switch. I still got the error message with both methods. The site said to only use the third option--deleting the Word registry subkey--if the problem did not occur using the /a switch. So I didn't do it. I'm not sure what I'm looking for here.

Where would I access Word Options, Resource, Diagnose please?

I am not trying to access files on removable media, but from my C drive. For what it's worth, I back up files on a slave hard drive and get the same error message when trying to access the same files there.

You mention a temp folder. Is this for Word alone? Or is it found elsewhere? I can't seem to find it in Word.

Thank you for your help.

Sherry

Umm, via Word Options|Resources|Diagnose. These are standard Word selections for Office 2007.

They're most likely found in:
C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Local\Temp
Simply paste that path into Windows Explorer and you should be take to the folder on your system. After closing all Office apps, you can delete any files there ending in .tmp or .cvr or starting with ~.

Easiest way to access your temp folder is to press [windows key]+R then in the popup windows type %temp% then hit [ENTER]. Your temp folder will open in whatever program you have designated as your default file explorer.
