Is it possible to get Word to automatically update a Table of Contents that I entered manually? I suspect the answer is no but it never hurts to ask....

No, updating a manual TOC isn't possible, I'm afraid.
You can format your headings with the built-in heading styles and then insert a TOC. See http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...fcontents.html.
