Problem with footnote numbering -- Two different footnote levels
Hello everybody,
I am working on a aprox. 220 page document which features nearly 500 footnotes. The notes have been automatically generated via a macro (see https://www.msofficeforums.com/word-...footnotes.html). Editing the notes and converting them into endnotes works fine. But automatic numbering does not: When I delete a footnote, the numbering of the notes to follow will not change. When I insert a footnote the counter will start anew. I would really appreciate if somebody could tell me how to get the automatic numbering of the footnotes to work. Thanks for reading. |

The macro in the thread to which you have linked inserts 1, 2, 3, etc. as custom footnotes (normally you would expect non-numeric symbols such as ǂ to be used in custom footnotes). That is why adding automatic footnotes creates a separate numbering sequence.

Thank you very much for the explaination.
Is there any way to convert those custom footnotes into automatic footnotes? |

The following macro should do the job. It is best to try it on a copy of the original document first:
Code:
Sub ConvertCustomFootnotesToAutoFootnotes() 'Macro created by Stefan Blom, MVP, May 2016 Dim ftText As String Dim r As Range Dim ftCount As Long Dim i As Long ftCount = ActiveDocument.Footnotes.Count For i = ftCount To 1 Step -1 ftText = ActiveDocument.Footnotes(i).Range.Text Set r = ActiveDocument.Footnotes(i).Reference.Duplicate ActiveDocument.Footnotes(i).Delete ActiveDocument.Footnotes.Add Range:=r, Text:=ftText Next i End Sub

This seems to work!
Thank you so much! Looks great after a quick run. I will have to check closely tomorrow (it's well past midnight where I live) but this is a great big help for sure. Thank you very very much. |

Thanks a lot Stefan Blom!
Some formatting within the footnotes got lost in conversion, but nothing to worry about. You have been of great help. Best to you! |

Thanks for the follow-up.
Yes, the macro as posted will convert footnote text to plain text, meaning that formatting such as bold, italic, etc. will be lost in the process.
