Default Footnotes

Hi. This is my first time. I've just registered. I need to use Footnotes in a Word document, so the note will appear at the bottom of the page (not an Endnote, that would appear at the end of the document). When I click on 'Footnotes' nothing happens. Alternatively, if I click on 'Endnotes' a little number appears and a place to write the note at the end of the doc. Is something wrong with my 'Footnotes'?

Did you click on 'Insert Footnote'? That should insert a superscripted number at your present location in the body of the document, plus an empty footnote with the same superscripted number at the bottom of the page.

Hello and thank you. Yes, I've tried that and it doesn't work. But I've found a way round it: I create and endnote, then go to the little number at the end of the document and right click. There, I have an option 'change endnote for footnote'. It's a bit of a drag to have to do it that way, but it works.
Any other ideas?
Christal.
