Locked Cross Reference Formatting
Hi,
When I connect a cross reference in my text to an appendices at the end of my document the cross reference text is shaded grey and I can't alter or change the shading back to a white background. Frustratingly it will change to any other colour just not white. So Word seems to have locked grey as a default cross reference formatting and will allow a colour change that is anything other than white. Can someone let me know what I can do to fix this? Thanks in advance. |

The grey shading for cross-references and other fields will not print, so there is no need to change the shading for these pieces of text.
If you want to hide the shading, do the following: Click File | Options | Advanced. In the drop down next to "Field shading," select "Never" and click OK.

Do note that the field shading to which you refer has no effect on the printed document; it exists purely as an on-screen editing aid, just like paragraph breaks showing as ¶, tabs showing as →, etc.
