Default Footnotes Alignment

Hello all,

I need some help aligning my footnotes.

This is an example of how I want my footnotes aligned:

This is how I currently have it in Word 2003:

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thank you!

If your footnotes are already entered, I would highlight all of them, then go to the ruler and adjust the middle Tab Arrow

You can see what I mean here

Thanks for the reply,

But, the problem is, Word seems to see the footnote numbers as part of the footnote text as well, meaning when I try to shift the alignment, the numbers would go with it.

My only idea now would be to manually hit "Tab" for each footnote to position the text as I want them, but that would be incredibly difficult in a long document.

Any other ideas would be appreciated!

If you will, do this: do a fresh document of junk and throw in a couple of footnotes

Now with my suggestions, can you align your footnotes the way you want?

This will tell us if the document you are working on has somehow gotten corrupted enough footnoting is NOT working properly, or it in your Word program

The problem is that Word won't show the Ruler in footnotes, so you can't adjust them that way. What you need to do is select all the footnotes (Ctrl-A) and then go to the Format menu ->Tabs and clear any existing tab values and add the one you want. Normally when a footnote is added a tab is added after the reference number automatically, so the numbers should stay aligned at the left. Don't forget that you can use Ctrl-T and Ctrl-Shift-T to hang and unhang the indent.

It does on my system...

PS: Please don't resurrect ancient threads - this one was last active over 7 years ago. I seriously doubt the problem is ongoing!
