There is no autosave in Word. There is only the saving of recovery information in the event of a crash. By your account the computer didn't crash, it was closed normally by the auto update process.

If you cannot remember to save often - see http://www.gmayor.com/automatically_backup.htm. Also set the automatic updates to require permission to update. This alone can save a lot of grief.

If you are very lucky you may be able to find some, or all, of the document in an ASD format recovery file.
