Default The Logic Behind Apply Formatting of Surrounding Text in Reveal Formatting Pane

I teach a course in which we use a book with activities. One of the activities doesn't work like it seems it should. After the first time the "Apply formatting of Surrounding Text" is selected, it changes to Times New Roman font (which is the font associated with the normal style), but the second time it is applied, it reverts back the Candara font, which is the font surrounding the text.

I've attached the file if anyone wants to see for themselves.

Here is the activity:

Here you can see the selected text:

Here is after the first application - note the Time New Roman font. This is the part that seems illogical.

Here is after the second application - note the Candara font.

Any help with this question is appreciated.

The results you are getting are the result of direct formatting being applied over your normal style. Your normal style is TNR text, not Candara. The Candara was applied using direct formatting as was the Italics. Both of those direct formatting attributes are removed by the first application of "surrounding text." The Bold is removed by the next application, it was not direct formatting but in the character style "Strong."

Your text is, to some extent, in error if the original document was formatted this way.

Here is reveal formatting with the box checked to show style sources. Word's Reveal Codes

You are welcome. Be sure to emphasize to your class that wherever possible formatting should be done through styles rather than direct formatting. Had the normal style in the document been modified instead of directly changing the font, the instructions in the book would have worked.

Your students may get a lot from the following series of web pages.
Basic Concepts of Microsoft Word - from Shauna Kelly

Also, if any part of your course deals with "Master Documents" be sure to read the following first. Master Documents "Feature"

Something other things you may be covering are, templates, automatic numbering and the creation and use of building blocks. Those are often not covered that well in books.

By the way, I am glad to see a course with this much hands-on and in depth work.
