Default Footnote icon is grayed out

Hello all,
I use MS office word for a little bit, and I am currently facing a glitch that I can't manage to resolve by my own.
I want to add a footnote to my document but the footnote icon is grayed out.

Could it be due to a maximum umber of footnotes for a document ?
Could anyone help me to figure out how to fix this issue ?

Many thanks.

That suggests your insertion point is in a textbox or that you have something else selected that can't be footnoted.

It's possible the document has acquired some of corruption. Corrupt documents can often be 'repaired' by inserting a new, empty, paragraph at the very end, copying everything except that new paragraph to a new document based on the same template (headers & footers may need to be copied separately), closing the old document and saving the new one over it.

As Paul suggested, the document may be damaged. Before you troubleshoot possible corruption, though, you can try this: Press Ctrl+End to move the insertion point to the very end of the main body of the document and then see if you can insert a footnote.

I just tried what you suggested (go end of document) and I still can't insert footnote.
Any help appreciated.

Does the document have some form of editing restrictions applied? If not, there's not much else we can suggest without seeing the problem document. Can you attach a document to a post with some representative content (delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.
