Default Spell Check is marking ALL words copied from downloaded document as mispelled

Hi there,

I hope someone can help me because I am about to blow a gasket. I am going to try give as much detail as possible and attach a few screen shots to try explain what is going on.

I am going to use just one document, but the same thing has been happening with several documents from different people - although they have all been downloaded from the same platform (Fiverr - in case that has any bearing). But not ALL the documents I have downloaded are doing this. I am running MS Office 2013 on Windows 8.1 but I have no idea about the OS or MS Office version these files are coming from.

The first screen shot shows the document when I first open it. As you can see, there seems to be no problems. But because I have to make some changes to the actual writing and that is easier to track in a new file, I also prefer my own formatting style and layout so I always copy across into another file. But when I do, every single word in the document (well almost) gets marked as mispelled (second screenshot).

My default past option is 'Keep text only' so no formatting etc should copy across.
I have checked the language AND the proofing options on the original doc AND my new doc which are both set to English (US) (and I 'select all' when I do this).
I have made sure that my New Document Template is formatted properly and working the way it should with other files and documents.
If I copy and paste WITHIN the document (so copy something in the document and paste it into the same doc) the PASTED text gets marked as mispelled.
If I type text into a blank document there is no problem, what I type is checked properly - wrong is wrong and right is right.
Not ALL the documents I am downloading are doing this - I can copy from one to another with no problems (even to the problem document).
I have copied the text into Notepad which normally clears all formatting, then shut down ALL MS office programs, opened a new blank doc and pasted from notepad - everything from the problem doc is 'mispelled'.
If I make any changes in the problem document, some words before or after what I changed get marked as mispelled but everything else is fine.

From all this I have figured out that there is clearly a problem with the original document, but that problem is carried over when I copy and paste - which is the root of all my problems.

Because this has happened a couple of times before and I DO NOT have the time to retype every single word every time it does, I am looking for a cause I can understand which may lead to a solution OR a cause & solution OR a simple solution.

I have downloaded the document multiple times to check that the file is not corrupting during the download so I'm pretty sure that isn't happening.

I am attaching the problem document so that anyone who thinks they can help can work with exactly what I have.

Hope someone can help and soon!!

You should check what the proofing language setting is for the range you're pasting into to ensure it's the same language as the content you're pasting.

As I said in my previous message

"I have checked the language AND the proofing options on the original doc AND my new doc which are both set to English (US) (and I 'select all' when I do this). "

So I know that the language and proofing settings for the WHOLE document are right.

Well, the only way you'd get a text string pasted as unformatted text to show up as all spelling errors as your screen shot indicates is if there is a mismatch between the languages. To demonstrate that there is a mismatch between the languages in your document, open it, select all (Ctrl-A), then press Ctrl-Spacebar. All your formatting will immediately change, because someone has overridden the document's Style definitions, and most of the text will be marked as spelling errors - due to a language conflict. the underlying cause of that conflict is that whoever compiled the text used a mix of Cyrillic and Latin characters (and perhaps characters from other character sets too), evidently to impede those who would use their copyright material - and make it more traceable. Beyond that, your nominal proofing language for the text is set to US English, but that isn't what the Latin text would be, anyway.

This has to be a language setting problem. Language and proofing is set by character, not word, paragraph, document or system.

Do you have "automatically detect language" turned on? If so, it needs to be turned off.

Select one of the words marked as misspelled and check the language setting under the review tab.

Check the language setting for each Style used in your document.

I have turned off the automatic language detection on both documents so that is not an issue.

And I copy and paste without formatting so it should clear all the issues, but that is when the spelling errors show up.

Therefore there shouldn't be any formatting, style or font issues.

I have checked the language settings on every word and random characters throughout the original document, as well as in the new document AFTER I have pasted without formatting and the language throughout is US English

The document was written by someone in USA so US English should be the default language for the entire operating system and there should be no Cyrillic/Latin character issues but I'll see if that doesn't have any effect.

I've looked at your document and have the same problem. I've confirmed that it is a spelling line (red) and not purple, and when F7 is pressed, everything actually brings up corrections.

Me, for, or, and others should not be triggering spelling errors with English U.S. as the proofing language.

As I have already said, the document uses a mix of Latin and Cyrillic characters. The letters that appear as Latin 'o' (Unicode 006F) for example, are not that but Cyrillic 'о' (Unicode 043E). Word's spell checker, quite reasonably, work on what the characters are, not what they look like. The mere fact you copied the content from a US website is irrelevant; the content's creators evidently have their reasons for using something that will trip up a spell-checker.

Paul, I missed your earlier post about the Cyrillic characters. We may have been posting at the same time. You are spot on, as usual. Sorry.

I would say it is a deliberate method of making copying difficult and one that took some work.
