Default TOC will only show "TOC \o "1-3" \h \z \u "

When selecting a word and selecting the Heading 1 or Heading 2, generating the TOC yields no table instead I get:

Contents
{TOC \o "1-3" \h \z \u}

See screenshot.

I don't even know how to describe it when searching for a solution. Made it very frustrating.

It was working prior to me working with Indexing.

Had open a brand new word doc and looks like TOC broke.

I am using 2013 office

I am getting the same message, only weirder. I have 11 separate documents (chapters in a book). I followed the instructions to create a TOC in a separate document linked to all 11. It works fine except chapter 9 gives me this message. There is nothing different about chapter 9. When I copy chapter 9 I can create a TOC within the copy, so I think there is nothing wrong with the data in the chapter itself.

One wonders, then, if someone has simply typed the field construction for chapter 9.

If you're seeing something like {TOC \o "1-3" \h \z \u} instead of a field's result, that's because you have Word's field code display toggled 'on'.

Pressing Alt-F9 toggles Word's field code display on/off. See also File|Options|Advanced>Show document content>Show field codes instead of their values.

If pressing Alt-F9 has no effect, it's most likely not a field you're seeing, but some text typed to look like a field.
