Table - Allow Spellcheck and tick boxes in certain areas only
I have a Word table that I have areas where I want the user to be able to type, other areas where I want them to put a tick mark in a box and other areas where they can't change text. I have put Protection in the document. When they are in the "Comments" section where I want them to put text, Spell Check doesn't work. I'm looking for some help on how I can accomplish all three things in my document -- please and thank you! BarbW |

In a protected document, spellcheck (as well as many other functions) are disabled. You have to make use of a macro that unprotects, run spellcheck and then reprotects the document. See http://word.mvps.org/faqs/macrosvba/...ProtectDoc.htm.

For versions after 2007 you would want to not use the "filling in forms" restriction, but rather the restrict editing - no changes - with exceptions restriction and possibly use content controls for the areas where you want text. Word 2007, though, does not allow the checkbox content controls.
If for some other reason you want to use the newer content controls rather than legacy forms, checkbox content controls can be added with a macro. If you are OK with the legacy form controls, you might as well continue using them. |

Good point. Note that editing restrictions are supported in Word 2003 as well (but content controls are not, of course).

I've never done a macro so I will need to do a bunch of playing on this. I neglected to say that I'm using Word 2007. Thank you for your input Charles and Stefan.

You don't necessarily need a macro, either. Try the more basic solutions first. :-)

For using macros, see Installing Macros.
You could use editing restrictions and make the checkboxes exceptions as well as the signature area. However, the legacy checkbox will not be something that can simply be clicked. A double-click will open the properties and the user can pick checked or not checked. That is not very intuitive. |
