Word spellchecker won't allow adding new words

The option when right-clicking on a wronglt spelled red-underlined word is "Add to dictionary". It is greyed out. It was working a few days ago. In Word > File > Proofing > Custom Dictionaries I created a new dictionary "My.dic." but still no active "Add to dictionary". (Word does detect wrongly spelled words OK.)



So, how can I get it back please?
