Default Showing "page of numpages" and "sectionpage of sectionpages"

Hi all,

I have been given a challenge which I have not yet found a solution for.

I have a document that consists of multiple sections. In the page footer I have to indicate which page of the complete document it is, which is easy enough by using the {Page} and {NumPages} fields.

I must also place (in the header) the page position inside the current section. Although the {SectionPages} exists to show the number of pages in the section, there is no field comparable to {Page} that restarts at a section break. I know the reset Page 'trick' that is usable when I don't have to show "{Page} of {NumPages}", but obviously that doesn't help.

I have the feeling that by inserting (in a hidden way) the right combination of additional fields I should be able to detect page changes and maintain a SectionPage SEQ field, but so far I haven't found the actual solution.

Any advice?

Thanks,
Rob

Word doesn't support two page numbering schemes in the same document. You can do the 'y' parts of both fairly easily, plus the 'x' part for the footer; it's the 'x' part for the header that provides the complication. For that, you can:
• Create a field coded along the lines of {SET Sctn# {SECTIONPAGES}} in each Section's header (which must be unlinked from the previous Section's header), where # is the Section #.
• For Sections 2 & later, insert a field coded along the lines of {={PAGE}-Sctn1 \# 0}, {={PAGE}-Sctn1-Sctn2 \# 0}, etc. to generate the 'x' part. For Section 1, you can use a simple {PAGE} field.

Note: The field brace pairs (i.e. '{ }') for the above examples are all created in the document itself, via Ctrl-F9 (Cmd-F9 on a Mac); you can't simply type them or copy & paste them from this message. Nor is it practical to add them via any of the standard Word dialogues. The spaces represented in the field constructions are all required.
