Default Automatically assign style to inline citation

Is it possible to automatically assign a style (say color and italic) to an inline citation when I insert it? I am using Word's built-in reference feature.

Not without some complex programming (beyond my skill to just whip out). However, you can create a character style that has the characteristics you want and apply that using a keyboard shortcut. My own citation style is Italics with a no-proofing language setting.

If I were to attempt the programming my approach would be to see if I could edit the XML for that Content Control type.

Agreed. A much simpler alternative might be to use a macro to loop through all citation fields and apply a Character Style to them.
