Speech Mark problem.
The problem I am referring to only occurs with MS Word and only when I print.
I sell vehicles and I produce a 'Short List' of vehicles available each month. The speach marks around the words 'short list' on printing, are converted to the symbols as re the attachment. They only occur when printing and have not always occurred. I am using a Cannon MG3560 printer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer with no improvement. I can find anything under the printer settings to adjust, and it is getting close to the end of the month where I must start printing again. Why print? Many of my customers are elderly, don't own computers and have to receive 'snail mail'. Any suggestions would be most welcome. |

Do your speech marks look OK when you do a Print Preview, or if you save the document as a PDF? The kind of behaviour exhibited by your quote characters is what might occur if a old non-standard font was used, where particular character sequences were used to generate characters that were not part of the standard ASCII character set. Changing to a modern font could then cause those sequences to 'unravel'.

Hi Paul.
Many thanks for the reply. I am using Arial 12pt. I changed all the text to Arial Rounded MT with exactly the same problem happening. Both fonts I would say are standard everyday fonts and were loaded into my new laptop when purchased a year ago. It looks like to me there must be a setting button. If with Windows Live mail, I go, file, options, compose, emoticons, I can change the brackets ( ) to emoticons. This box is unchecked. I cannot find anything similar to help with the present problem. I have just tried Baskerville Old Face and the problem is still there. I am in your hands. Cheers, Les. |

There is no setting in Word to change this behaviour. If it affects just one document, it's possible the document has acquired some for of corruption. Corrupt documents can often be 'repaired' by inserting a new, empty, paragraph at the very end, copying everything except that new paragraph to a new document based on the same template (headers & footers may need to be copied separately), closing the old document and saving the new one over it. If it affects multiple documents, it's possible you have a faulty Office installation or an errant third-party addin. You could try repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair). If the behaviour doesn't occur when you run Word in safe mode, an errant third-party addin is the most likely cause.
Failing any of the above, without actually seeing the problem document, it can be difficult diagnose the issue. Can you attach a document to a post with some representative data (delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

while you continue trying to sort out the quotation mark problem, you could just discard the quotation marks – they aren't actually identifying anything special :-}

I doubt either of us is in a position to claim 'short list' or "short list" doesn't represent anything special. Besides which, one could hardly take that approach with quotes in general.

I would mildly disagree, about this particular case: why does "short list" merit quotation marks and large comprehensive listing not? Not that this means solving OP's problem isn't important …

voyagerone: Here's an explanation of what's going on -
The affected characters are what are typically called ‘smart quotes’, created using the double-byte Unicode characters 2018 & 2019. When transmitted using protocols that only support 8-bit characters, these typically go through a process called 'UTF-8' (8 bit Unicode Transformation Format), but most 8-bit encoding used on the internet today is done according to the 'ISO-8859-1' standard. The ’ and ‘ strings you're seeing are the result of 'UTF-8' content being misinterpreted as 'ISO-8859-1' content. This generally only affects email content and, sometimes content processed on PCs after having originated on Macs. Since you've not indicated any email/Mac involvement, I'd ordinarily have suggested reinstalling the printer driver, but you've already done that. That leaves three possible areas to explore: 1. A corrupt document; 2. A faulty Office installation; 3. A rogue third-party addin. If it's only the one document that's affected, or all documents based on a particular template, a corrupt document or template is the most likely culprit. Corrupt documents/templates can often be 'repaired' by inserting a new, empty, paragraph at the very end, copying everything except that new paragraph to a new document based on the same template (headers & footers may need to be copied separately) or by creating a new template and pasting the content into that, closing the old document/template and saving the new one over it. If the problem affects a varity of documents, you could try repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair). If neither of the above makes any difference, try starting Word in safe mode, by holding down the Ctrl key when starting Word. If the problem goes away in safe mode, the cause is most likely to be a rogue third-party addin. Restart Word, then disable all non-Microsoft addins. If the problem goes away with the addins disabled, you can re-enable them one at a time till you find the culprit.
