I'm generating a very long document-over 300 pages, with 11 chapters and very many figures and tables. I'm using page numbering my chapter (1-1, 1-2, etc.)
All of the chapters have correct page numbers except chapter 1
I have verified that all chapter headings are style Heading 1. I've also looked at the section breaks.
I'm at a loss, as I need to complete this project in a week and can't seem to get the chapter 1 page numbering to come out right.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

uhm, so far you haven't told anyone how it is not working.
It would help to know what you want or expect to happen and what you are getting instead. I assume that your heading numbers were set according to the directions here and not by just pressing the multilevel numbering button on the Home tab.

The Chapter numbering was set up as in the guide you pointed me to. What I want to happen is for the pages in Chapter 1 to be numbered as 1-1, 1-2, etc., NOT as they are now--2-1, 2-2. Thanks for your help, but I still don't know how to fix it.

In that case, if you don't want to get involved with calculations, Chapter 1 must be Section 1 and you number the pages with two fields "Chapter { SECTION }-{ PAGE }"
Unlink the next section and restart the page numbering

Section 1 will give you Chapter 1-1, Chapter 1-2, Chapter 1-3 etc
Section 2 will give you Chapter 2-1, Chapter 2-2, Chapter 2-3 etc
and so on.
