Hello,



I'm trying to do a specific formatting type for my endnotes.

I need to put everything in my document in two columns and then have the endnotes follow the column setup, so if my text ends in the right column I get endnotes below the text on the right, and beside, not below, the text on the left. The next page then follows with the endnotes beginning in the left column.

For the record, I think this citation system is awful.

AFAIK Word cannot format your endnotes that way. When using a two-column page layout, the endnotes start on the left side of the page, continuing down that side in endnote order, before starting down the right side of the page. When they continue to a second and subsequent page, the endnotes on each new page will likewise start on the left side of the page, continuing down that side in endnote order, before starting down the right side of the page, and so on.

Default not impossible, just use an old version of Word...

This appears to be a change (I'll say a regression) in either 2010 or 2013 unless someone can show me how to fix it. I have a document written in 2011 using Word 2007. It does exactly what the original post requested, and is typical scientific journal format. The endnotes continue the 2-column body of text.

I just opened the docx in Word 2013, and it displayed as expected. I did a Save As and immediately it reverted to the behavior I can't seem to change. Word balances the columns up to the endnotes, then puts the endnotes in it's own 2 column section after that. I attached 2 images showing the before and after. Note that the References heading is in the main body, after which the endnotes appeared (separators were deleted)

So, I don't mind it balancing the endnotes that move onto a new page, but I need the endnotes to be part of the main balancing. Do I have to go back to manual fields and cross-refs? I recognized they've made a number of layout improvements on the backend, so I'm not overly upset that it didn't hold compatibility, but I would like to know the process to get that layout, or something equivalent, back.

Any version of Word can do that. What can't be done is putting the endnotes for text in the right column in the right endnote column and endnotes for text in the left column in the left endnote column.

ahh.. I misread your request.

still wouldn't mind figuring out how to fix the 2013 behavior... but maybe in a new post.

The Word 2013 behaviour varies according to whether the document is based on a Word 2010 or earlier template, or a Word 2013 template. I suspect your Save As caused it to switch to the Word 2013 template. The only thing I'd be inclined to change re the 2nd representation of your document would be to insert continuous Section breaks either side of your 'References' heading and formatting that with a single column layout, so there's a more obvious break in the text flow.

yes, definitely using the journal's Word template which was written on a version before this change. I'll play around with a fresh doc and no old templates and see if the behavior changes, and more importantly if there exists a way to include the endnotes in the main column balancing.

unfortunately I have to change it to match what the conference proceedings wants, which is 2 column and references at the end of the last column, not in a new section of columns (or a single column). needs to be in two columns like in the first image. i did put the REFERENCES title back in as a separator instead of the last main body item before the separator, but no separation/continuation lines, etc. if it was a journal I could just ask the copy-editing staff to fix it after submission, but not the case here.

If there's no way to get that result anymore in MS word, I'll need to ask the conf paper staff what they suggest. or go to latex

You may be able to revert to your preferred layout by installing the original template on your PC (renamed if necessary), then ensuring the document is attached to that rather than Word's 'Normal' template. Another possibility, depending on what Layout Options Word 2013 gives access to with this document (it varies according to whether a Word 2013 or Word 2010 template is in use), is to insert a continuous section break before 'References' and check/uncheck the 'Don't balance columns at the start of continuous Sections' option.

yeah, I don't actually see that option anywhere. Assuming it's supposed to be under File/Options/Advanced/Compatibility, there's nothing under there. no options, nothing.

filing this under 'it really shouldn't be this hard'

just to close this out: the fix is to either save in the old format (.doc) or not use endnotes for referencing/bibliography, but to use Words bibliography tool. the bibliography tool inserts the references into the main body as a field, so it follows the body column format. I had only tried it once or twice in 2007, and it was so painful I went back to using the manual endnotes method. seems that's broken now for 2 col format documents.

I can only assume that 3rd party citation managers that connect to word don't run into this problem, as they likely insert citations in the main document body. Endnotes now always make their own section at the end of the section/doc, and columns are just going to balance.

After a lot of searching I was even able to stumble on an ASME format XSL that someone hacked together for bibword, even though it doesn't seem to have made it into their default style set:

And new versions of Jabref can export to that XSL format well enough, once you know where the source and style files are hidden...

Who knows, maybe one of these versions will get reference management right...
