Default End note Text Style and End note Reference Style

A professor needs to format a book for a publisher. The specific instructions are that the entire document is to be in 12 point Times New Roman, double-spaced. The endnote number in the document is to be in superscript and use 1. The number in the actual endnote must not be in a superscript and must be 1.

I have modified the end note text style and that works fine. I have not been able to modify the end note reference style to come up with 1. Modify does not give me that option.

If I change the end note reference style by typing 1. and ask it to modify (update) the style to match the selection, I get both arabic and roman numerals. Also the number in the text remains arabic.

I would appreciate any assistance you might be able to provide.

You don't modify the Style to change between Arabic and Roman numerals - you change the referencing number format via the Footnote & Endnote dialogue (Alt-S, Q, E).

Default End note reference style

Thank you for your reply. That allows me to get to the number format box, but I still do not have the option to place a period after the number nor to make it superscript in the text and not superscript in the actual end note.

I am fairly proficient with Word but I can't seem to figure this out. I have read the article from the Word Tips newsletter about using find and replace after the document is complete but that still doesn't allow for superscript in the document and not superscript in the end note.

That's how Word handles the Endnote references.

You could add the periods via Find/Replace, using the Endnote Reference style as the Find parameter, with:
Replace = ^&.

If you leave the Endnote Reference style superscripted, so it remains so in the body of the document, you can remove the superscripting from the Endnotes by clicking in any of them, then using Ctrl-A followed by a single click on the superscript button in the Font group on the Ribbon's Home tab.
