Why is Comment Insertion Keyboard Shortcut not Working?
Hi All:
As taught in below website, the keyboard shortcut for inserting a new comment is "ALT+CTRL+M". https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/290938 However, when I select a text for commenting and press this combination of keys, nothing happens. Does anyone have any clues why this might be? Your help would be much appreciated. |

It could be the sequence. Word 2007 and above made the Alt key a special trigger.
Try holding down the Ctrl key with one hand and pressing Alt+M with the other. If that doesn't work, try (as a diagnostic, not a cure) starting Word in Safe mode. If there is the same problem, try starting Windows in Safe mode. If either of those allows you to use the shortcut, write back with what you did and the results. Someone can help you figure out where the problem is. |

Thanks, Charles.
I started Word in Safe mode and the shortcut works. How do I get it to work in normal mode? |

OK. That tells me that the problem is likely a poorly written Add-In. The procedure for fixing these is discussed here: Add-Ins in Microsoft Word
Another more direct method might be to download yet another Add-In, Chris Woodman's Keyboard Organizer. You could use it to find which Add-In has hijacked the shortcut. You would simply load each Add-In and look for the shortcut in the listing. |

Thanks again, Charles.
The results: 1. I can presume you are correct in saying "the problem is likely a poorly written Add-In". My employer has a Word add-in, which may very well be poorly written. 2. I've used the Add-In and found a completely different function for shortcut "Alt+Ctrl+M". 3. Due to organizational policies, I will just have to do without the comment adding shortcut functionality, until these policies change or the Add-in is fixed. In my opinion, my question has been answered and this thread can be marked as solved. A thousand thanks! |

You could, easily, create a new keyboard shortcut for insertion of a comment and save it in your own Global Template. This requires no macros.
