Default Problem saving docx files in Win 7

To MSOfficeForums,

I'm having a problem whenever I try to save a new Word 2007 .docx file. I create a new file using Office button > new > blank document and then I edit the document to create content.

Then I save it using office button > save as > Word document. The document appears to save normally but Word comes back immediately with another save-as dialog box. This time the suggested file name is the name that I originally requested with the last character replaced by a numeral “1”. This file saves normally and the original file appears in the Windows folder as an empty file (size = 0 kb)

I’m running Windows 7 and I did not have the problem using Vista and Office 2007.

I would appreciate any help in resolving this error.

Thanks,

Don Krafft

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't see anything unusual in Word Options > save. I have:

Save files in this format > Word Document (*docx)
Save AutoRecover information every > 10 minutes
AutoRecover file location > default location
Default file location > default location

Offline editing options
Save checked-out files to > the server drafts location
Server drafts location > default

Preserve fidelity when sharing this document > (the current document name is in the pulldown box)
Embed fonts in this file > not checked

Next, if you can establish when this problem began, then do a Restore back to as close as possible previous to the problem

I would also consider doing a new install of Word by uninstalling with the FREE program Revo--otherwise, a regular uninstall will maintain the same Registry Keys that contains the problem(s)

Do you suggest uninstalling Word only or all of office? I use j16 Power Tools to clean the registry and it looks like it does the job of the Revo software.

In any case, are you convinced this is a registry problem?

Thanks

Default Mr

Also, this has been going on for a while so a restore back that far would remove other changes that I want

Okay, based upon a time you can kinda establish there was no problem, this would indicate something has changed in Word that is more Registry Oriented

If you do the conventional uninstall/reinstall you are simply replacing Word with a newly installed Word with the same Registry settings, so you have not really changed anything

If this works, then you can easily return Word to settings you prefer

Otherwise, look how much time you have spent and will spend trying to resolve an issue that may easily be resolved

If the above fails to work, then it will be much easier to explore other avenues

As for doing this with other Office products, are you having problems with other programs?

Yes. I'm having a slightly different save problem with Excel where I get a message saying there is a sharing violation. Excel then saves the file with an odd numerical name and I have to retrieve and rename the file to the original filename. I will uninstall Word and Excel and then clean the registry using j16 power tools and the free Revo software. Then I'll re-install and see how it goes.

I have already tried repairing office but I may try that one more time before uninstalling.

Thanks very much for the help.

Don

Do let me know how it goes

What I am suggesting is like this: you install a 3d party program on a trial basis, the time runs out, you uninstall it, then reinstall it, but the program "knows" what you are up to What is happening is the Official Uninstall still keeps stuff in the Registry--this is how the program knows what you are doing

The same concept goes with Office or the Internet Explorer

Many things in Windows is NOT what it seems, e.g., file deletion -- This is why cops always confiscate a criminal's computer, because s/he thinks s/he has deleted certain files

Hi zyzzyva57,

I was able to solve the problem by uninstalling office and cleaning out the registry. I first used the control panel > programs and features > uninstall and then I tried the Revo program. Revo was not able to clear out the registry entries after the program was already uninstalled. For some reason jv16 power tools did not clean out the office entries either and I don't know why.

I found a Microsoft knowledge base article on how to manually uninstall office and it showed which registry entries to delete (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218/). I used jv16 power tools to search for and delete more than 4000 office-related keys. I had a registry backup and I was very aggressive.

Then I re-installed Windows 7 from the installation disk and then I re-installed Office 2007 and the file save problem has gone away. Windows 7 and Office continue to be unstable with "not responding" being a common operating state but that's just par for this Vista-warmed-over version of Windows.

Thanks for the help,

Don

Great!!

Concerning Win 7 and Office 2007: did you do a clean install of Win 7 or Upgrade, because this is crucial...Remember, unless you did a clean install, our old friends the Registry Keys "remembers" many of the old settings and you could easily have an installation mixing up Registry Keys from old versions of Windows and the latest version

When I upgraded to Win 7, I did a dual boot (keeping Vista), then a clean install of Windows 7 as well as Office and have had NO problems

Shortly, I will delete Vista when I find myself no longer having to go there to get something or do something

I originally did a clean install of Win 7. Then I recently did an upgrade install in an attempt to repair it. I'm using the 64 bit version of Win 7

Thanks,

Don
