Default 2016 Word for Mac - How open docs bigger?

Just downloaded 2016 Office for Mac. When I open Word docs, they open too small. I don't want to hit the max size button to fill whole screen because then you can't stack multiple windows. Is there a way to set default to open bigger like before? I was hoping the program would learn if I kept stretching windows bigger but no.
I'm on Macbook 10.11. Thanks.
