Default Variable text field code based on occurrences on each page

I have a document with a specific text which will need to display 2 versions, a longer version the first time it appears on each page, and a shorter version every time it appears thereafter on the same page.

e.g. suppose a company name 'Widgets R Us (a widgetco subsidiary)' and it's shorter version 'Widgets R Us'

I have this working using a macro in another document, but this current document will have an area where the user will edit text in a certain area within the document, and I can't use the macro to cleanup afterwards.

Is there a way to do this (either using field codes or some other device) which will automatically update when the text reflows as the user is editing the text?
