Word 2003 Brackets appear around copied text

Hi All,

I have recently experienced a change in behavior of my MS Word. When I highlight a selection of text and press Ctrl+C it copies the text as expected, but a new unexpected behavior has started. Word inserts a greyed out square bracket around the copied text. I am not able to get rid of those marks.

As I say, this is a new behavior. Did a setting get changed somewhere that I don't know about? How do I get rid of these marks and change this behavior.
