I'm using Word 2007 and am thinking about upgrading. Would anyone know if any of the later versions can automatically save a backup copy of the complete document, not just AutoRecover Information. Thanks.

You do not need to upgrade for that, nor would it help. See: Automatically backup Word documents and Save numbered versions add-in for Word 2007 to 2013.

I think Word 2010 is a significant improvement over Word 2007.

Charles, what I have in mind is something that will automatically save a copy of a document say, every five minutes, like AutoRecover only save the whole document to another drive. Looking over those two add-ins you suggested I don't see anything you can set for auto saves. Did I miss something?

The first one will automatically save your document on a given schedule set by you. Note that Word's automatic backup creates a true file, not just recovery information whenever you save a document. This is limited to one backup, though. Opening the main file and saving will overwrite the backup.

Graham has a two versioning Add-Ins, but neither automatically saves on a schedule. The other one is:

If you have both Save Reminder and Save to Two Places add-ins installed the save reminder add-in should save to both locations if you have the schedule set to automatically save and the appropriate check box checked on the save reminder dialog.

I got Save Reminder installed and it's working, but Save in Two Places isn't saving automatically in conjunction with Save Reminder. I tried saving to two local drives but it didn't work in either case. It saves if I run it manually though. Word 2007, Win XP SP3.

Never mind, I uninstalled Save Reminder because it interrupts whatever I'm doing when it saves. This wouldn't be a big deal if I didn't save that often but we have power failures here all the time and I have to save frequently. I understand it might be something that's unavoidable in Word, but considering my situation I don't think I can live with it. I'll just go back to saving manually.

Save in Two Places is very handy but (and I could be wrong) there doesn't seem to be a way to only add "Save Document" icon to the quick access toolbar, it's either two icons or none. With very limited space on the visible area of the toolbar two icons is a waste, especially since I only need one.

**EDIT** Okay, sorry. I figured out how to get just one icon. I was adding the wrong one. This add-in should come in handy.

It is already on the QAT. Look at the far right. If your QAT is long, you may have to use the drop-down.

Graham, the actual placement will be determined according to the names of any loaded Add-Ins that modify the QAT along the lines spelled out in Modifying the QAT and Ribbon in Microsoft Word. See "Order of Icons."

Since your Add-In starts with "S" its icons will be near the end if not at the end.

I tend to have a lot of small Add-Ins running some of which add to the QAT. I would guess this is true of very few users. In my case, my old WordArt gallery ends up behind yours.

Is there any way to move the "Save Document" icon (the one that installs at the end) in Word 2007. In XP space is very limited on the visible part of the toolbar so for me at least using the icon requires two clicks.

It depends. QAT modifications in Add-Ins are added after ones that are simply installed on your system.
Then they are in alphabetical order by the name of the Add-In.

If you want it earlier you can right-click on the button in the Add-Ins tab and tell Word to add it to the QAT. This will give you two, but you don't see the second one anyway. Word will add it to the far end of the modifications you've made, but by selecting Customize the QAT you can reposition those QAT items.

Modifying the QAT and Ribbon in Microsoft Word
