Word 2013 does not search text in footnotes unless I first click in a footnote
I would like Word to search all text, including footnotes, which I recall it used to do. It would search the text and then ask if I wanted to search footnotes. Now, it will search all body text and say the text can't be found, until I click within a footnote and then search again. This is not terribly efficient (and I risk forgetting to do that and think there are no instances of X in my document, when there are). Is there a way to correct this?

Are you searching via the Navigation pane (Ctrl+F in recent versions of Word)? It should find text inside footnotes without problems.
Try searching via the Find and Replace dialog box (Ctrl+H). Make sure that "Search" is set to "All" and see if your search is more successful.
