Default Opening .docx attachment

Vista Home Premium 64
Maybe a Word 2007 question or an Email question, not sure.

When I receive an attached .docx in an email I must save it first and then I can open with Word 2007, the default for that association.

When trying to open the attachment from the email message without saving it first, I get the the notice:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel".

Other than the "Control Panel / Default Programs / Associate a file type or protocol with a program" I cannot find a "Set Associations control panel".

Wow! I never had a question go unanswered before. Also, no answers in three other forums. I honored, but lonely.

Hi ADKREV,

A little more patience wouldn't go astray. Also, since you're obviously posting the same question in multiple forums, please see:
http://www.excelguru.ca/node/7
for cross-posting etiquette.

To fix the problem is probably as simple as closing Word then going to Start > Run/Search and inputting:
winword /regserver

Thanks for the reply and link to the etiquette url. I appreciate knowing the protocols for cross posting.

I did run winword/regserver and it had no effect. I am unsure of what was to happen. It opened a new Word document. I saved that file as test.doc (Word 2007) and sent it to myself. I clicked on the attachment and got the same message as I listed in the orginal post.

Hi ADKREV,

OK, try the following steps to create an association in the Set Associations control panel:
• Click on your "Start" menu > "Control Panel" > "Programs"> "Default Programs" > "Associate a file type or protocol with a program".
• After the file extension list populates, browse the list to find the docx file extension.
• Click on the docx file extension, and choose "Change Program" and Select "Microsoft Word" > OK.
• If "Microsoft Word" isn't shown, click "Browse" and navigate to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder to find it.
