Default Calendar & body of document not viewed in Word 2007 but is in Word 2010

I was emailed 2 Word files (doc and docx) to me that I cannot open with Word 2007. Part of the document I can see but the rest I cannot. I had the sender send it to a dropbox site from which I did a direct download, but same issue persists.

One of the documents just has written statements in the body. The other I see grayed out fuzzy looking rectangular borders around what is in reality a calendar of dates with times and lines to place a Booked status for taken appointments. I did a print screen so you can see.

I Googled about this and I thought by installing a Compatibility package it would solve this, but it did not.

Finally, I tried to open the doc and dox files on my new laptop with Word 2010 and it opens with the full calendar showing and not greyed out fuzzy borders on the page and the entire text on the other document.

But I want to be able to access and edit these documents on my desktop and other laptop which are running Word 2007.

I have added print screens of what I see with the grayed out recantgular boxes that should just show a list of dates and times along with the dropbox open document before trying to download which shows the calendar without the rectangular grayed out boxed.
How can I fix this so I can?

Thank you.

Have you checked whether your Office installation has the 'show picture placeholders' option checked? if it has, uncheck it. Likewise, have you checked whether your Office installation has the 'show drawings and text boxes on screen' option checked? if it hasn't, check it.

Otherwise, problems of this kind are usually attributable to the Office 2007 installation not being fully updated. Please check that your Office 2007 installation has all updates installed.

Both boxes were checked. I ran Windows Anytime and even went to download Service Pack 3 for Word 2007 but it detected it as already installed. Updates were installed today for Security for Office 2007. After restarting, I checked the file again and the issue persists. What shall I try now?
Thank you.

I have to uncheck the show picture placeholders' option checked? BRB with status.

It was already unchecked.

I see that only Service Pack 3 for Office is installed. I downloaded Office 2007 SP2 but it detected that it was already installed.

I have Windows updater checked and it has been downloaded all important updates all along.

You will need to upload the problem document (not just pictures), so someone with Word 2007 can diagnose the issue (delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

PS: Please don't keep posting multiple replies containing part of your response - one reply setting out all the facts is enough. I've merged your various replies.

Although I don't have an immediate answer to your display issues with Word 2007, I do question the wisdom of nesting a table in a textbox on page 2. Everything on that page could be accommodated in a single table - including the borders.

Hi Paul,

All I know is that I did not create the document. I should also add that the same issue persists on my desktop running Windows 7 64 bit and Office 2007. i have a colleague located elsewhere that is is not able to see the calendar either. I am not sure as to what version of Windows or Office she is using. But I doubt it is 2010. I imagine the document was created in Office 2010, but I could be wrong. I'll try to find that out today for you if that might help in figuring this out. But it isn't just the calendar not appearing. Initially, before I downloaded and installed the Compatibility package on both the laptop and desktop having the issues, I wasn't able to see the sentences in the body of the first page. After installing, I was able to see them on both computers.

TY to date Paul for your assistance.

Fred

It is as if the text has a clear color. If you highlight the whole area on page 2 and change the text color, the text will re-appear. I don't think that solves your issues or not though...I agree with Paul's comment above.

I can confirm that the calendar does not show in Word 2007 and does in Word 2010. Keep in mind that these two programs are not the same.

When removed from the text box, the calendar is visible in both.

It is possible that the "text box" is a shape first introduced in Word 2010 rather than an actual text box. I do not know. (Text boxes have been part of Word for a long time.) I agree that there is no good reason I can conceive to put a table inside a text box. However, I tried it in Word 2010 and opened the result in Word 2007 and it worked fine.

Ok, maybe that is the issue. So how do you remove from the text box since I do not see anything or on the preceding page where nothing appears without any text boxes. Also, you said you tried it in Word 2010 and opened in Word 2007 and it worked fine. Did you mean you tried it in Word 2010 and it worked fine because that is what I was able to do.

I mean that everything was viewable in Word 2010, but not in Word 2007. When in Word 2010, I cut the contents of the shape or textbox deleted the shape and then repasted the contents. I saved that and it was viewable in Word 2007. I also tried inserting a textbox in Word 2010 and putting a table in it. That also worked fine in Word 2007.

I now tried copying the contents of the shape while in Word 2010 into a textbox generated in Word 2010. I saved that. When I opened it in Word 2007 those contents were viewable in the textbox but not in the shape.

I then tried, while in Word 2007, selecting the unviewable contents of the shape, copying that, and pasting outside the shape. It then was able to be viewed in Word 2007.

Default changing font color within the calendar makes it viewable!!

Yes, by changing the font color I can now see the calendar and also on the other page, all of the sentences are viewable. Strange how that is on Word 2007 that you have to do that. But on Office 2010 it is there without having to change the font color!
