TOC Links - Links in table of content disappearing when table is refreshed
I have an automatic table of contents where I am trying to create links in the headings, but the links disappear when I refresh the table.
I have tried <Insert> , <hyperlink>, <anchor>, <headings> When I do this, the link works, but if I refresh the entire TOC the link is gone. I have also tried bookmarking the heading then <insert>, <hyperlink>, <anchor>, <bookmark> This method also works until I refresh the TOC. The links and bookmarks disappear. When I go to access the bookmark again the bookmark doesn't even exist anymore. How can I create links that will still work after a TOC refresh? This is important because this document will need to be updated in the future by multiple users. I've searched for this, but couldn't find anybody with this exact problem. I am using Word for Mac 2011. Any help is much appreciated. |

A standard TOC field automatically links to the referenced headings. Adding hyperlinks, etc., does nothing to improve that and, as you have discovered, get deleted as soon as the TOC is refreshed.

It does link, but only the pg # is clickable. How do I make the heading text clickable as well? Everything I have seen uses the hyperlink function.

Anywhere in a standard TOC field is clickable, not just the page #s. I don't know what you've seen that uses hyperlinks for TOCs - the only time a standard TOC field might look like hyperlinks is if it's viewed in Web layout view.

If you want each row of the TOC to be a hyperlink you need to include the \h switch in the TOC field eg
{TOC \o "1-3" \h} If the \h switch is missing then only the page number will be a hyperlink

It is possible that the TOC function in the Mac version is different. In Word 97 the link was only from the page number. I believe that changed in either Word 2000 or Word 2002.
Here are three articles that might help. |
