Default cross references and dynamic numbering in a document

Hi there,

First of all, as a newbie, apologies for perhaps an obvious question.

I have a manual that has 17 chapters.

Each chapters includes various sub-headings.

I have various references to illustrations in each chapter.

For example the text may say

"for further information, see illustration X"

I would like to create a table of all illustrations in Word at the start. And I would like each illustration to be numbered in reference to the chapter.
So for example the text in chapter 14 may be

"for further information, see illustration 14.01"

All numbers should be automatic and update if I insert a new illustration.

I am using the various headings already as part of the text, so wondered if there is a simple way to have a separate illustrations table and reference system.

Sorry for the long post, but I hope it is clear!

Any advice welcome!!!

Default dynamic numbers in text

I would like to insert numbered items throughout my text. For example, text would read something like:
"For further details, see illustration 1.1"
Where the 1.1 is dynamic and updates if I insert another reference before it.

I have tried using Insert caption, Illustration, but Word then defines the whole sentence as the Illustration and add lines.

I then want to have a second table of contents for these separate numbered items.

Any ideas? I have been hunting for hours!

If I insert caption, illustration this changes the whole paragraph to the illustration.

If I could just insert illustration X within normal text it would solve my problem...

You are going to have some reading to do.
You are going to want to have numbering set up tied to your heading styles.
How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly

Yes, you are going to want to use Word's built in heading styles, perhaps with modified formatting and with the numbering attached.
Why use Microsoft Word’s built-in heading styles? by Shauna Kelly

Then, you will want to use the References > Insert Caption button. You can include the number from your section in the numbering for the caption. This automatically inserts a bookmark. You can use References > Cross-Reference button to insert a cross-reference to a caption.

You will also want to look at the StyleRef Field.
