I can get the left indent to work inside the cell, but not hanging indent. What commonly causes this among people that are not that good at Word (like me)?

Default Indent

I have no trouble with this setting in table cells and am trying to think what else might be interfering. Perhaps you could list your Paragraph dialogue settings.

OK. These are my paragraph settings:

Alignment: Left
Outline Level: Body Text

Indentation, Left: 0"
Indentation, Right: 0"

Special: Hanging, By: 0.18"

Spacing, Before: 0 pt.
Spacing, After: 0 pt.

Line Spacing: Single, At: [blank]

Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style: not checked.

Default Stumped

As a matter of further investigative work, my next step would be to confirm that what appears to be a single paragraph in the table cell, really is one. Do this by displaying hidden characters. On the Home tab of the ribbon, select the backwards P symbol in the paragraph group. This usually hidden symbol ends every paragraph. If for example, the first line in your table cell ends with it, that's a paragraph, so you will not see any hanging indent applied.

Assuming that's not the issue, I would try applying a style with a hanging indent to an existing paragraph in your table. If you have never created a style and are unsure about it, let's use Format Painter to see if that will apply the hanging indent.

Using a paragraph outside the table, format it with a hanging indent. Then, with your cursor still in the paragraph, either click on the Format Painter icon in the Home tab (the paintbrush, at left) or press Ctrl+Shift+C to copy the formats of the paragraph. Then, if you used the icon, click in the table paragraph, or, if used the keyboard shortcut, place your cursor in the table paragraph and press Ctrl+Shift+V.

Any luck?

Using your criteria above, I had no problem getting the hanging indent to work (as illustrated in the attached). However, this seems too simple...What am I missing?

I think I got it.

Ulodesk pointed me in the right direction. I had hard returns (enter) at the end of each line of text in my table cell. Changing those to soft returns (shift + enter) made this work.

Thanks for looking at this.

You don't need hard or soft returns in a table cell...at all, just continue typing. Look at my attachment in my previous post.
